The combined Department of Mathematics and Statistics came into existence in November 1976, with the major objective of developing it to a Centre of Excellence in this region in mathematical sciences and applications and to provide facilities for training, study, and research in these areas. This Department was bifurcated to form an independent Department of Mathematics on 1st January, 1996.
The Department conducts IM.Sc. Degree programme, MSC Programme in Mathematics, and Ph.D. programmes. The students generally take up teaching positions, pursue research careers, or join the industry. Many of our students secure admission to Ph.D. programmes at premier National Institutes such as IITs, IISERs, IMSc, ISI, TIFR, etc. In addition, several students have also earned prestigious international fellowships, such as the renowned Marie Curie fellowships, reflecting their academic excellence and global competitiveness. Apart from instructing post-graduate courses, the Department has from the beginning taken the leadership in promoting research in mathematics and its applications.
Thrust areas of research are Algebra, Semi groups Theory, Stochastic Control theory, Functional Analysis, Framelets, Numerical Solution of PDE, Functional Analysis, Fuzzy Mathematics, Graph Theory, Optimization in Machine Learning, Optimization in Neural Networks, Fractional Calculus, Wavelet Approximation, Operator Algebras, Operator theory and Coarse geometry, Convex Optimization, algorithms and their convergence and complexity analysis.
